How would you describe The Warrior's Stone: Book 1 of the New Terra Sagas to a new reader?
  • This is old school military sci-fi (i.e - like Battlestar Galactica) and fantasy (i.e. Brigadoon). Most people describe it as cinematic as it's a mix of a love story, action, adventure, culture conflict, space battles and aliens.
What was the inspiration behind The Warrior's Stone: Book 1 of the New Terra Sagas ?
  • New Terra is the name of the planet Roy finds himself on. The Warrior's Stone is a special stone that some people can use to a magical weapons.
Which authors do you admire? How have they influenced your writing style?
  • Asimov, Author C. Clark, Ray Bradberry, Rod Serling, Rebecca Branch, and Marco Kloos. The first four are classic writers of sci-fi who established the genera. The last two are contemporary writers who are lesser-known but are redefining what Sci-fi is. Kloos is bringing back the old school military sci-fi in the style of Starship Troops. Rebecca Branch is a romance writer who has written time travel and AI/Robot novels with a blend of romance and erotica helping to expand the genera to a wider audience.
Can you tell us a little about the locations in the book?
  • 300 years in the future on the Planet of New Terra
What advice would you give to aspiring authors? How would you advise a new author about traditional publishing versus self publishing?
  • Don't just use software to edit your books. Find someone to review your book for content, character development, and consistency. Then hire an editor for proofreading, spelling, grammar, and structure. Then have beta readers go through your book. Editing takes three to four times longer to do than writing the book for most serious writers. It's a lot of work, but it's better to have people who are working with you to find the mistakes and help you bring your story to life than the reader ripping you apart in negative reviews.
What's your writing process?
  • I start with how I would imagine the first part of a movie might be with the character I have in mind. Then I write to see what happens next.
Which character in The Warrior's Stone: Book 1 of the New Terra Sagas has had the greatest impact on readers?
  • It's both Roy and Katreena. It is both of their stories and how their two worlds come together through them.
If The Warrior's Stone: Book 1 of the New Terra Sagas were to be adapted for TV or film, who would you see in the lead role? Who did you have in your mind’s eye when you wrote him/her?
  • Hard to say. Maybe Karen Gillian as Katreena and Chris Evens as Roy.
How have readers responded to The Warrior's Stone: Book 1 of the New Terra Sagas?

The Warrior's Stone: The New Terra Sagas: Book One, by Matthew O. Duncan, starts right off by introducing the character of Lt. Commander Roy O'Hara as he leads his squadron into battle. The objective: destroy the enemy's latest Super Destroyer. Things go downhill for Roy when he is shot down and crash lands on an unexplored planet. Near death he is soon found by a young woman named Katreena. She saves his life by using a special stone called the Boto Stone. She is unware that by using the stone she has created an intimate bond between them.
At first I wasn't so sure that I was going to like this book. However, as I was reading through the book I found myself liking it more and more. The ending has definitely got me wanting to read the next book in the series. The storyline is interesting, nicely written, and well thought out. The characters are nicely written and the growing relationship between Roy and Katreena is believable. I recommend those who like the Sci-fi/Fantasy/Romance genres to try out this book.

Such a wonderful book! It has such a great blend. It's sci-fi, it's adventure, it has the touch of the mystical and has a touch of military strategy, or just the strategy to outwit an enemy, or get a person back into wanting to live again (love the relationship of the "dad like" Captain that get's Roy back out into wanting to live in the world again after he experiences tragedy. And it is a beautiful love story as well, with an almost "brigadoon" ethereal quality. This has such a interwoven complexity and robustness, it immerses you immediately and to the end. Can't wait till the sequel.

Very rich tapestry woven masterfully into a world of fantasy and science fiction. This story draws from combined styles of some of my favorite authors, hints of the gunfighter series of Steven King, Shannara trilogy by Terry Brooks and even Louis Lamoure. I feel that the story will appeal to a wide audience through the stories engaging character's love story, the fight of a culture to survive and an intergalactic battle

This was recommended to me through Goodreads and is so NOT my normal genre's but I was very pleasantly surprised. Very nicely laid out story, kept me engrossed and had enough of my romantic elements to make me LOVE this book. Author did a really good job with elements I didn't expect to like. Awesome!

Synopsis

O’Hara never wanted to be a hero. He was a combat pilot only because his skills made him the best and Earth needed men like him to fight the enemy amongst the stars. Living a life a service and duty, alone in a cockpit suited him well, but fate had other plans for him. Shot down over an alien planet he was saved by a beautiful and mysterious woman named Katreena. He soon learns that the world is populated by people who seemed to have been lost by time and controlled by stones that the people believe to be divine magic. Wanting only to return to his fleet, he discovers that he has more than a passing connection with the world’s people, a love that resurrects a heart long thought dead and a decisive battle to the war that followed him.
