How would you describe 'Embracing Me' to a new reader?
- It's a book to help those struggling with mental illness find new coping strategies and know they are not alone. It will help family and friends of those struggling to understand what they might be experiencing. There are even worksheets at the end of the book that correspond to each chapter.
What was the inspiration behind 'Embracing Me' ?
- The worst feeling was being alone when I was depressed. I wanted to write this book so that others know they are not alone.
What was your favorite chapter to write in 'Embracing Me'?
- The first chapter - write a letter to your younger self. It was an activity I had always wanted to try but kept putting off. It was cathartic to get it written finally, and I had fun thinking about what my younger self's reaction would have been.
Why did you add worksheets?
- I have read many books that give great ideas but no practical way to implement the ideas. Once the book is over I often forget to use the great tips, and I didn't want that to be what happened with Embracing Me. Each chapter focuses on a different aspect (e.g. writing a letter to your younger self, medication, etc.) to help someone with their mental health. There is a worksheet associated with each chapter to implement the tips immediately.
What advice would you give to aspiring authors?
- Write! Keep writing no matter what anyone else tells you. The more you practice, the better you will get.
What's your writing process?
- I create a general outline of what the chapters will need to cover. The first draft is simply to get the outline a little more fleshed out and get the ideas on paper. The second draft puts in the emotions and details. Then it's time to edit edit edit!
Why did you name is "Embracing Me'?
- The title didn't come until I was halfway through the book and realized that it wasn't just a book about depression. It was a book about accepting my depression and embracing all aspects of my identity. I ended up adjusting the chapters that were written before that revelation to fit with the new purpose.
If 'Embracing ME' were to be adapted for TV or film, who would you see in the lead role?
- I would love to play myself because I wanted to be a famous actor when I was younger. I acted in all the school plays when I was growing up, but as an adult, I haven't had a chance to explore that opportunity.
How have readers responded to 'Embracing Me'?
- I have been receiving great feedback from readers. They enjoy the practical use of the worksheets and the honesty within the book.
Where next? What are you working on now?
- Another non-fiction about my brother who died of a drug overdose in 2021. I just finished the second draft and am working on the edits.
